A Glance at Joe's Career

Joe Biden was born in Scranton Pennsylvania before he moved to Delaware with his family 10 years later. Joe experienced a middle-class upbringing after his father was able to find work after the preceding economic decline in Scranton. During high school, Joe was elected class president during his final two years of high school and participated in an anti-segregation sit-in in Wilmington.

Joe went on to earn his BA in history and political science from the University of Delaware, and later earned a law degree and passed the Delaware Bar Exam.

In 1972, Joe Biden won a surprise victory, replacing a longtime republican incumbent to become a United States Senator representing Delaware. At age 30 (the minimum age requirement) Joe Biden became one of the youngest Senators ever elected. Joe Biden served as a Senator from 1973 to 2009, and was the fourth most senior Senator, and the ever longest serving senator from Delaware when he resigned to become Vice President from 2009-2017.

During his time in the Senate, Joe garnered a reputation for being a strong speaker and debater. Joe served on the Judiciary Committee and Foreign Relations committee among many others, and oversaw the crafting of numerous pieces of legislation and policies such as:

  • The Federal Assault Weapons Ban
  • The Violence Against Women's Act
  • The McCain-Biden Kosovo Resolution

After being elected as Vice President, Biden took on many roles. He was responsible for overseeing infrastructure spending from the stimulus, and acted as a trusted advisor for President Obama. After VAWA was reauthorised, Biden co-chaired the Whitehouse Taskforce to Protect Students From Sexual Assault. In May of 2012, Biden made the remark that he was "absolutely comfortable" with gay marriage. This remark is believed to have led President Obama to change his public position on the matter just days later, leading to influence Democratic support for Gay Marriage, after the administration had already ended DADT.

During and after his Vice Presidency, Joe Biden has passionately campaigned for Democrats around the country. Under the current administration, Joe has been a vocal critic concerning everything from LGBT protections in Chechnya, protecting Dreamers, to remaining in the Paris Accords Climate Change Agreement.
